“Daruma”, The Good luck charm

Daruma doll

What is Daruma?

A Daruma is a Japanese traditional doll.
Originally, it was a representation of the Indian priest Bodhi-dharma.
He was said to have lost use of his arms and legs after spending nine years meditating in a cave.
Daruma dolls have different sizes. These are made of paper mache on bamboo frames painted as bright red.

Doll for Making prayer

They are used as charms to fulfill some special wishes such as bountiful harvest or successful election to public office.
As you can see in the picture,It has a prominent Chinese character written in a gold color that says “fuku”, which signifies wealth, or “katsu”, which means winning.
It is sold without pupils when purchased.
After purchasing it, people paint one eyeball with a pupil and it is placed in the family shrine.
It is said that Daruma’s effect on realizing wishes continues just for one year.
It is believed that Daruma’s influence on wishes coming true only lasts for a year.
We kept the Daruma doll in our home for a year.
Afterwards, we bring them to a shrine and burn them in a special way as a holy ceremony called “Dondoyaki” which is held at the beginning of the year. After Dondo-yaki, Then, we buy a new one.

The next time you want a successful year ahead, why not buy Daruma doll when you say a prayer?
