Geta is a Japanese traditional footwear. 
Geta is made from wood and consist of one board and two “teeth” on bottom.
It is a good match with Kimono.

The History of Geta

The origin of Geta is 3000 years ago. It is said that people begined to use them as shoes to prevent them from dropping down while walking on rice fields.
General people started to put it on 400 years ago.
In the old days, wearing a collapsed student uniform and putting on Geta was regarded as fashionable for male students, and the style was called “Bankara”.and became widespread.
It is common to see people who put on Geta  until the end of 1960’s.
However since then it is becoming rare to see Geta due to the spread of sandal and Americanization.

The recent situation of Geta

Recently Geta is rarely put on because of substitution of sandals and sneakers.
But still now Japanese accept the sound of walking Geta  favorably. It is expressed as “Karan Koron”.
Many people like to walk with Geta when they wear Kimono.
If you have a chance to get accomodation at “Ryokan”, a Japanese style hotel in a spa town(“Onsen-gai” town in Japanese)
You can put on an outfit of Kimono and Geta which are rented by Ryokan and walk around the Spa town to visit each Spas.
(Spa town=Onsen-gai: There are many hot springs that you can enjoy visiting multiple hot springs in a day there.)
