Enoshima Island

Enoshima is a small island located in the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan, specifically in the city of Fujisawa which is next to Kamakura city. It’s situated in Sagami Bay and is connected to the mainland by a bridge and it is easy to walk from the opposite shore.

Access

There are some ways to access Enoshima.

  • Enoshima station on the Odakyu line that stretches from Shinjuku station.
  • Enoshima station of the Enoden line that is transferred at the Kamakura station of the JR line that stretches from Tokyo.
  • Enoshima of the Shonan monorail line that is transferred at the Ofuna station of the JR line that stretches from Tokyo.

If you are not in a hurry, I recommend you to go by the Enoden line.
Because you can enjoy good scenery of the sea shore and experience running close to residential areas and on the street by train.

Station Front street & Nakamise street

Enoshima Nakamise Street

Enoshima station of the Enoden line is located on the opposite shore of Enoshima island.
On the way to the bridge to Enoshima island, you go through a shopping street where lots of fancy shops line up along the area.
After crossing over on a bridge to the Enoshima islands, you can find Nakamise street which approaches the Enoshima shrine.
Nakamise street is very lively and there are a lot of souvenir shops that you can visit.

Enoshima Shrine(Benzaiten)

Enoshima shrine is also called Benzaiten, which means the woman god who has a beautiful face.
It is known for its beauty and love-related prayers. It’s particularly famous for the “beauty prayer,” where women seek beauty and romantic blessings.

Enoshima Shrine is also famous as a deity of matchmaking, and it is said that if you place an ema (wooden plaque) with a wish for marriage on the tree of matchmaking, your wish for marriage will come true.

It is a natural cave made by wave erosion.
The atmosphere in cave is awsome and you can find many stone statue along the cacve.
There is a legend of Dragon god associated with the cave.
The dragon that had been in Koshigoe, the adjacent village of Enoshima was so bad and devastated the farms there.
One day the big earthquake occured and lots of stones fell from the sky and the island appeared.
Then a very  beautiful woman god appeared, and started to live there. She is “Benzaiten”, the god of Enoshima.
The dragon fell in love at  first sight and proposed to her.
She refused him because of his bad behavior.
He reformed himself to get married with her and she accepted him.
You can see the statue of the dragon god deep in the cave .
